Fall is Coming So It Must Be Time for Dominion’s 2017 Veteran’s Day 5K Race

2016 Veterans Day 5k Runner carrying U.S. flagDominion Consulting prides itself on its work with the Department of Defense (DoD). The DoD provides soldiers administrative and financial support they need out in the field. To further support the DoD, we have partnered with Team Red, White and Blue to host a race on Veteran’s Day weekend for the fourth year in a row. The Dominion Consulting Veteran’s Day 5k is part of Potomac River Runners’ race series and takes place on Sunday, November 12 in Fairfax, VA.

Honoring Those Who’ve Served

Veteran’s Day was first established as “Armistice Day” to celebrate the first anniversary of the end of fighting in World War I. President Wilson commemorated the first Armistice Day with the following statement in 1919:

To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.

The holiday has evolved over the years. It eventually became the day of commemoration that we now know as Veteran’s Day in 1971.

The Race

Team Red, White & Blue’s goal is to transform the way America supports its veterans when they leave the military by bringing veterans, their families, and American citizens together through authentic social interaction and shared experiences in communities all over America. Their chapters and communities deliver consistent, local opportunities for veterans and the community to connect through physical and social activity. They host weekly fitness activities, monthly social events, and participate in local races and events together. These programs are at the core of Team RWB’s mission.

5k’s are great for new and experienced runners alike as they require as few as three days a week for training. The New York Times provides a great training plan for beginners that can be completed in 7 weeks. There’s no better time to start running than now! Autumn provides great weather. Furthermore, consistent exercise has been shown to improve mental health and aid with memory.

Packet pick-up for the race will be available at the following times:

The 5k will start on Sunday, November 12 at 8:00 am with the 1k fun run starting at 8:05. Make sure to get plenty of rest the day before the race, so you can put your best foot forward on race day!
