• People First These Days in Information Governance

Director Laurence Hart speaking on Digital Transformation and Information Governance at the NCC-AIIM meetingLast week I spoke at the local National Capital Chapter of AIIM. I gave an updated version of the talk I’ve been giving the past year on Information Governance in the Age of Digital Transformation. While the talk was not new, it was the first time I had given it locally. The discussion was new and very much on point. As I sit here waiting for the 2017 InfoGovCon to start, I want to share some of the highlights.

  • Getting Information to the People at AIIM17

A sign welcoming people to AIIM17Another year and another AIIM Conference in the bag. It was a good year as the industry seems to be slowly coming to the realization that while content is a problem, the solution is to solve the business problem, not necessarily the content problem.

The industry entered AIIM17 with a debate over whether Content Services or Enterprise Content Management (ECM) should be the default name for the industry. The speakers, and attendees, basically uttered a massive, “Who cares?” We are solving problems and learning how to make sure that not just information can be found. Valuable information can be found.

  • Off to AIIM 17 to Catch Up on the ECM Industry

Sunrise over the beach in Flagler Beach, Florida, near Orlando, site of the 2017 AIIM ConferenceNext week I will be representing Dominion Consulting at the annual AIIM Conference. AIIM is returning to Orlando after a three-year hiatus. A lot has changed in the industry since the last trip to Orlando. Even the events in the last year have changed the space quite a bit. EMC will not be present and any Documentum presence will be at the OpenText booth. An interesting cloud-based Records Management vendor from last year, RecordLion, was just bought by Gimmal. There will also be many discussions over Content Services versus ECM as the new label for the industry.

As always, the most valuable part of the AIIM Conference will be the exchange of ideas taking place between sessions and over refreshments. Another year of new experiences gained and lessons learned that the community can combine into success for everyone.

  • The Future of Work at Dominion

Dominion Consulting's new front doorThis post was originally drafted after the 2016 AIIM Conference, but postponed until now due to some exciting changes at Dominion. Throughout the summer and early fall, we focused on creating our new brand in conjunction with a new, larger, office space build out. We started with a clean slate, and slowly worked our way to the present. The journey through both was challenging and exciting.  Throughout the process, much of what I took away from AIIM 2016 was in the back of my mind, shaping my feedback around what I thought the future of work at Dominion should look like.

Our company, like many others in our line of work, deploy teams across a variety of client sites. Our project managers do a great job at creating successful environments for team cohesion within a project. However, cohesion across project teams at a corporate level, is something we strive to improve continuously. While attending AIIM 2016 in New Orleans, I sat through several great keynotes and sessions. They helped shape my opinions and feedback throughout our re-brand and office construction projects, especially in Josh Morgan’s #FutureOfWork discussion.
